Downsizing can be a significant change and a source of anxiety for those planning to move. However, there are ways to combat the feeling of being overwhelmed and to meet the challenge of decluttering and downsizing head-on.

Here are five ways to reduce the stress of downsizing and to maybe even enjoy the process:

1. Don’t do it alone. Downsizing is the perfect time to invite your family, friends, and loved ones to help you declutter and pack. Having the support of your community is essential, as downsizing often invokes feelings of sadness and wistfulness. Lean on the support of your loved ones and let them help you! The odds are that you’ll make unexpected yet wonderful memories together.

2. Start small. If you’re spinning in circles in the middle of your house, wondering where to start in regards to packing or decluttering, choose a neutral space or room, such as a bathroom, a neglected office, or a kitchen cabinet. By choosing a small space that won’t inundate you with memories or nostalgia, you can jumpstart the packing and decluttering process without tackling a large or overwhelming space first.

3. Have a plan. The more you plan for packing, the less daunting the process will be. Set attainable goals for yourself and be realistic about the time it will take to sort through your possessions, choose what to donate or discard, and pack the rest. The more detailed your plan is, the more manageable the move will be!

4. Don’t suppress your emotions. As you prepare to move, you may experience sadness, disappointment, and doubts. These are natural responses to big changes! Rather than push through these feelings, talk about them with a trusted loved one or friend.

5. Maintain your focus. It’s easy to get caught up in the details and the to-do lists. So when it begins to feel like too much manage, remember your “why,” whatever that may be. Whether it’s more freedom, more flexibility, or more financial security, remember why you decided to downsize and how your decision will positively impact your life.

Downsizing can be a big undertaking but don’t do it alone! Rally your community, lean on their support, stay organized and stay focused.
